On Friday 19th September 2014, two of our members were playing in a charity match at the Rochford Hundred Golf Club and later noticed an interesting plaque on the wall. Note the name, K. R. Rubery, in the right hand column.
The Thornton Cup is the pre-eminent Challenge Cup played for, off scratch, by teams of 10 from golf clubs in Essex and parts of Middlesex and Hertfordshire. The competition is a knockout usually over five rounds during the season until the last two clubs standing meet for the final. The format is five foursomes in the morning and ten singles in the afternoon and only very good and very fit golfers can hope to win.
Keith Rubery is a member of St Laurence Lodge and still plays off nine.
